Lagos and Accra, the West African cities most popular with global Afro stars

These two cities attract American stars like magnets

For years now, Lagos and Accra have set themselves as benchmarks in the sub-region,
even in Africa, in tourism.

They are the scene of a new movement observed nowhere else on the African continent in
this sense that they mainly welcome African-American celebrities each year (rappers,
actors, businessmen/women…) and even stars from other horizons who carry out the
travel to these cities full of life and stories.

So what are the reasons for this new trend?

Having conquered America, African-American rappers and black businessmen mainly
people from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and even Tanzania often feel the need to
reconnect with their origins. This is explained in particular by the fact that Afro-American culture
having been influenced for a long time by the cultural mix in the United States ended up losing facets
very important in its tradition.

Another reason and not the least is, the tourist attractiveness of these two cities that are Lagos
and Accra.

Lagos State is a state in Nigeria, located in the southwest of the country. Smallest of the states in Nigeria,
Lagos State is the most populous and economically important, home to Lagos, the most
major city in the country. The cultural but also economic richness of Lagos makes it a
must-see attraction in Africa by welcoming thousands of people every year.

Among the biggest attractions of the city, Victoria Island, a district which is located in the South-East of
Lagos in Nigeria, in the Lekki Peninsula. It is one of the richest neighborhoods, with very
numerous business centers, restaurants and night clubs, and resorts worthy of
Beverly Hills architecture.

To this must be added the rise of Nigerian music, more specifically Afrobeat, which has conquered the
around the world today with artists like Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid collaborating
each year with the greatest artists in the world.

What about Accra?

Accra is the capital of Ghana. Besides being the largest city in the country, Accra is the center
political, administrative, economic and financial of Ghana.
Like Nigeria, many African American stars trace their origins to Ghana, and this
constitutes a sufficient reason which pushes them to go there massively when they have the
possibility.

Among the stars who made the trip, Drake, Michael B Jordan, the interplanetary icon
Beyonce who a year ago, made a sensational featuring with Shatta Wale which totals today
almost 60 million views on YouTube and millions of streams on Spotify.

Music also figures prominently in Ghana’s tourism boom, with
urban artists also known worldwide such as Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, R2bees, Stonebwoy, or
again Black Sheriff who caused a stir with his recent album released in 2022, Kwaku The Traveller.

Another possible reason for this tourist peculiarity is the presence of a certain lady
installed for several years now, called Alpharita Constantia Anderson, known
under the nickname of Rita Marley, the widow of reggae musician, Bob Marley. She was a member of the trio
the I Threes, the choir of the Wailers and the reggae group The Soulette.

According to People With Money Magazine, the singer-entrepreneur weighs in 2022 around 245
million euros.

With all these determining factors, it is not surprising that Lagos and Accra constitute today
behemoths in the tourism sector in West Africa?
